Friends,

I know many of you have been personally affected by the heavy storms and flooding over the past few weeks – and many more of you know someone who has had their home, business, or neighborhood damaged in the recent extreme weather.

I want to share with you some good news: President Biden just approved the request that I and others had made to have him declare these damages on the Central Coast a ‘major disaster’.

That means residents of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties can now file claims directly with FEMA for damages and to get assistance in the wake of these storms.

If you were affected, you can apply in the following ways:

Online at https://www.disasterassistance.gov/ or https://www.disasterassistance.gov/es (Spanish)

Via smartphone at m.fema.gov or m.fema.gov/esp (Spanish)

The FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362 by phone, or AskIA@fema.dhs.gov by email.

SMALL BUSINESS RELIEF

Small Business Administration (SBA) loans may also be available to businesses and individuals located in regions affected by the storms.

Homeowners and renters may also be eligible for SBA loans to repair and replace disaster-related damages. To apply for SBA disaster assistance, please visit: https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/ela/s/

AGRICULTURAL RELIEF

Farmers and ranchers may also reach out to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for assistance. If you reside in San Luis Obispo County, you may contact the USDA Farm Service Agency office in Templeton at (805) 434-0396. If you reside in either Santa Barbara County, you may contact the USDA Farm Service Agency office in Santa Maria at (805) 928-9269.

Amigos,

GIVEslo helps those in need in San Luis Obispo County

(Some of this information is from an article on pages1and 19 of the April 25 - May 8 edition of the Estero Bay News by Theresa Marie Wilson) and has been updated July 22, 2021 by Robert Jonez, CRC.

Co-founders Kara Strauss, President and Rebecca Espy, Secretary, along with Erin Parker, Treasurer, have launched a new organization, GIVEslo, a non-profit dedicated to building a network to donate items, time, and money to meet essential needs, which can be anything from helping to pay a utilities bill, providing a car seat for a new mother, or helping with medical expenses. Need referrals will come from schools, county health departments, medical professionals, and social services.

The co-founder's efforts are an expansion of the work of now-retired Sandy Richardson, who started SLO Womenade about 15 years ago, but the newly formed GIVEslo organization is more broad spectrum, avoiding being pigeonholed into just one thing.

Update July 22, 2021 by Robert Jonez, CRC:

GIVEslo now has 501c3 non-profit status, and has created a website, www.giveslo.org. They have been providing much needed service and requested items for the past year. Because of their efforts, funds have run very low. For funding, besides community outreach, they are accessing the current list of Womenade doners, plus involving local businesses and applying for grants. They are accepting individual donations through their Facebook page. For more information or to make a donation, contact Kara at 303-908-4498.
